Mental Health Intern

Job Title: Mental Health Intern

Location: Hybrid

Job Type: Part-Time

Reports To: Clinical Supervisor


Our practice is currently seeking masters-level internship candidates to join our Chicago-based team. This internship is ideal for students with a keen interest in specializing in work with children and adolescents. Interns will be required to work in-person for three days per week, with the flexibility to complete administrative tasks remotely. Additionally, there may be opportunities for telehealth services. 


Interns have the chance to conduct individual therapy sessions and participate in group therapy mental health services. Group therapy opportunities may include, but are not limited to, sessions such as a girls' empowerment group, trans support group, LGBTQIA support group, and boys'/young men’s support group. Interns are also encouraged to propose new group topics based on their interests and the needs of the community. 


Due to the increased demand for our services and expanded clientele across our site locations, we can ensure that interns will meet their required internship hours.


INTERNSHIP CANDIDATE EXPECTATIONS:


  • Demonstrate professional conduct at all times during internship hours.
  • Adhere to scheduled hours and report punctually.
  • Exhibit competence in professional judgment and practice consistent with legal, ethical principles, practice guidelines, and agency policies.
  • Conduct supervised individual and group counseling sessions.
  • Provide psychological assessments, intakes, and make appropriate referrals.
  • Engage in weekly supervision sessions with a clinically licensed professional.
  • Document and address concerns and challenges regarding clinical field experience during supervision.
  • Possess a car or reliable transportation to and from the internship site.
  • Be subjected to a federal fingerprinted background check with DCFS - paid for by the internship site. 


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
  • This is a Chicago-based position, with in-office attendance required two days a week.
  • Completion of core coursework in counseling techniques, ethics, and psychotherapy.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and establish trust with diverse client populations.
  • Basic understanding of mental health disorders and therapeutic interventions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and uphold ethical standards in accordance with state and federal regulations.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and basic understanding of electronic medical records (EMR) systems.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Previous experience in a counseling or clinical setting.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care or experience working with trauma survivors.
  • Familiarity with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), or other therapeutic modalities.
  • Bilingual skills (e.g., Spanish) are a plus.


INTERNSHIP SITE LOCATIONS:

Insight Out Therapy & Wellness, LLC has partnerships with the following community-based organizations where interns will complete their required in-person hours:


Chicago Youth Programs 

Location: 5350 S. Prairie Ave Chicago, IL 60615

Clientele: Youth ages 6-18


Simeon Career Academy 

Location: 8147 S. Vincennes Ave Chicago, IL 60620

Clientele: Adolescents ages 14-18



SUPERVISION AND LEADERSHIP:


This is a learning position intended to fulfill academic and clinical hour requirements. Supervision for licensure hours is provided by the Founder and Lead Therapist of our practice, Bianca Hernandez, LCPC and our program sites offer:


  1. Quality supervision from experienced professionals, including regular, constructive feedback and support.
  2. Exposure to a variety of client populations and issues, providing a broad range of experiences and skills.
  3. Structured learning experiences, including training sessions, workshops, and observation of different counseling techniques.
  4. Ample opportunities for direct client interaction, including conducting sessions and developing treatment plans, with guidance and support.
  5. A positive and supportive work environment where interns feel valued and are encouraged to ask questions and seek help.
  6. Development and refinement of a range of counseling skills, including assessment, intervention, case management, and report writing.
  7. Regular feedback and formal evaluations to track progress and identify areas for improvement.
  8. Opportunities to connect with other professionals and build a network for future career development.
